Many parts can be more economically produced with CNC Wire EDM machines instead of conventional machining. In fact, without Wire EDM, many unique machining processes could not be done. In addition, G&H’s CNC Wire EDM machines are controlled by computers which can ensure part accuracies up to +/- .0001”. And, this accuracy is completely repeatable – the last part is identical to the first part.Our machines can handle a wide variety of sizes and we can cut tapers to any degree with accuracies to +/- .0001” and surface finishes to 8 RMS. The extremely fine finish can eliminate the need for additional finishing processes such as grinding or polishing. All of G&H’s CNC Wire EDM machines have 4 axis capabilities. We can cut any electrically conductive material no matter how hard or soft, including carbide, Inconel, tool steels, ferro-tic, hastalloy, stellite and titanium. Our turnaround time on Wire EDM projects is one of the quickest in the industry.
Wire EDM has been used in industry for about 50 years. It uses a wire as the electrode. The wire is stretched taut and then submerged in deionized water along with the work piece. The water acts as dialectic until the electric discharge happens. As the wire moves toward the material to cut and the distance gets smaller, the voltage increases and a spark is created between the wire and the material. The heat caused by this electric discharge enables the wire to cut through the material.
Ideal candidates for wire EDM pose one or more specific challenges—small-radius inside corners, tight slots, or difficult-to-machine material, whether hardened parts or a high performance alloy. Wire EDM is also used for parts that absolutely can’t have any burrs or need a superior surface finish.
